Common Conditions That Affect Older Adults and What to Do About Them

You might have been healthy since birth. However, older adults are more prone to certain conditions, and, before long, you might find your pill box full each day and your limbs creaking at every movement. If you have generally been well for a long time, you might not know the signs and symptoms that you should look out for, nor what conditions could affect you. This is where this guide comes in.

    Diabetes

Diabetes can affect people of any age. However, type 2 diabetes is more common in older adults due to the lifestyle factors that can affect it. Diabetes is not a life sentence, though, and can be managed through diet and medication. However, it can be serious and lead to other health issues, such as eye and foot problems. Some of the signs of diabetes include increased thirst, a frequent need to urinate, and weight loss. Although these can be symptoms of other conditions, getting diabetes ruled out through a blood test can ensure that your sugar levels do not worsen and that you are able to manage it, including through new technology, before it is too late.

    Dementia

Memory issues can take a lot away from you, leaving you without the memories and the independence that you treasure. Although some forgetfulness is usual as you age, if you are constantly forgetting where you are, people’s names, and facts and information, this could be an early sign that you have Alzheimer’s or a related condition. The disease progresses slowly, though, meaning that you have time to make arrangements, such as your will and power of attorney. You might also want to look into potential care homes for when you need 24/7 care. For instance, Eastleigh Care Homes could give you the full life that you deserve even if you are a danger living at home through their specialist programs.

    Cancer

Cancer is a scary word to many people, and most families have been affected by the disease in some way. Most people do not know very much about it, though. There are many different types of cancer. Although some are more common in younger people, the vast majority are likelier to show us as you reach your elderly years. You might be afraid to get a diagnosis and this could leave you ignoring symptoms such as night sweats, weight loss and fatigue. However, the earlier you catch cancer, the more treatable it is through surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, and your team will be able to develop a treatment plan that has been tailored to you.

    Arthritis

You might believe that arthritis is just aching limbs and a loss of mobility. However, it can be incredibly painful and can worsen over time. To ensure that you are still able to get out and about, you need to be aware of the areas of your body where the condition is developing. This will give you the chance to find out what type of arthritis you have, any treatments that are available, and to develop a pain management scheme. This will also allow you to look into mobility aids that can lessen some of the pressure on your joints.
